Drinking Rome’s local wine is the amber-tinted white of the Catelli Romani.
Of these, Frascati is the most famous, though in practice most of the wines from the region –the ring of volcanic hills south of the city- are similar in character. No one pretends they are of vintage quality, but for simple meals or picnics they are more than adequate. Up market restaurants should have reasonable wine lists, but few non-italian wines.
It is Roman custom to take a cool glass of wine at almost anytime of the day, a cheap but perfectly good sparkling wine from Italy’s Veneto region. Rome’s “dolce vita” days are largely over, and night life for many Romans involves eating or enjoying late summer evenings at street cafès. Most places stay open until the small hours fom june to september.
However, plenty of night spots exist for more exacting punters, though some may strike you as over expensive and outdated. Cultural entertainment is what you would expect of any capital city, though non Italian speakers will find cinema and theatre choices severly limited. Rome’s night clubs and discos are stylish and sumptuously decorated palaces where dressing up is very much on style. Entrance can cost anything up to €20- €30. Good smaller clubs are located in the Testaccio area near Trastevere with opening all nights.
